I think I probably have Kristen to thank because she was the one who first introduced me to the wonderful bliss of Mod Podge in college! Then I found this site and the creative projects just took off!
I started by cleaning the whole cabinet and taking out the drawers. I also took off the handles, but unfortunately no amount of unscrewing and hand tools could get the lock out, so I just left it on :( The I measured and cut my fabric. After that easy breezy, paint down your decoupage and then lay your fabric over it. I also coated the outside with another layer of Mod Podge.
While I was at it I figured I would make a matching light switch cover too! :)

Yes, Mod Podge is addictive!! I like the file cabinet though I think David would not appreciate me doing that particular pattern to the one in his office :)
You could use any pattern you wanted to ;)

Nice to know there may be hope for an old metal filing cabinet we have in our garage!
Um.... Totally doing this!!!
OMG! I doing this. Is there a tutorial on this?
Love this idea! I have an ugly tool chest in my sewing room that is screaming for a makeover like this. Any tips on how you did it???
I am now a new follower :)
I was looking at my ugly filing cabinet last night thinking - if only it were prettier! Well now you've inspired me it will be!
I found this on Pinterest and am so doing this to a 2 drawer file cabinet we use as an end table! Bought yards & yards (didn't realize how much) at a thrift store for a mere 99cents last week. Now I just need to find the time to get this done, my goal is before Thanksgiving!
Thanks so much for this great idea!
does it require a special type of Modge Podge when doing fabric?
I just used regular mod podge.
I made sure the metal and pieces were clean before I started.
Also you might skip the mod podge around the rims of the cabinets... Mine are so sticky now only my husband can get the drawer open for me lol!
What an incredibly cool Idea, I am sitting here looking at an old black cabinet that looks horrible this is an idea I can do and it does not look like it will take very long, thank you so much!!
This looks great! About how much fabric did you use?
Les than 1.5 yards, but if you have s pattern to match up it might take more
Hi! I was just wondering how you got the file drawer handles off? Beautiful work by the way
