Daily Walks

Yesterday I finally started taking Eva for a daily walk... I know 2 days in a row so far ;)
Because she is a large woman!

So yesterday she came in after a 30 minute walk and laid down and made a huge puddle of "I am dying" slobber on the floor.
But today was my turn for a problem! When we went yesterday I didn't have any pockets on me, so I took off the house key and clipped it to her collar and held my cell phone. No biggie. Well this morning I walked out the door to go to work, locked the handle from inside and went to lock the bolt with the key..... small problem. I didn't replace the key from yesterday's walk! So I ran across the street to our neighbors and got our spare key (they are a super sweet couple from our church and they watch Eva when we go out of town.) So morning crisis averted. 1 o'clock rolls around again today and we get ready to go out and walk again. I grab the keys and my cell phone and a jacket and we walk out, me locking the the knob handle as I pull the door shut. I go to lock the bolt with the keys that I remembered to grab this time and low and behold.... I grabbed the church keys! They are exactly the same shape and color as the house keys! So now my house key is locked inside and the spare house key is locked inside. The back gate was locked and no way in. Praise God that I took my cell phone :) I called Aaran and he drove 40 mins up from work to let us back in after our 39 minute walk :)

So who knows what day 3 is going to be like?

Okay wow! I can't believe it's been since the spring since I've posted. Well for the last 2 months I have been in full sewing swing because I will be doing my first craft show next weekend!

So I know it's been a LONG time since I have posted anything about sewing the Butterick 5383 and that's because it's been a long time since I have sewn anything on it :) I lost my sewing mojo for a while.... but I am still not quite sure it is back :S

So here is the update..... PROBLEMS GALORE! Really if you know anything about clothing construction, now would be the time to chime in :) because I am stuck at what to do next and I don't know if i can go back either... so here's the damage...

After some friendly advice from the Joann lady I figured out what the staystitching thing was all about, so I got that in there just fine.

Then I proceeded to the invisible zipper with not too much fuss. (Even though I don't have that invisible zipper block foot thing, I managed with my regular zipper foot.)

Then I had a "tube" of a dress if you will, so I decided to try it on before going any further.... here is where the flying bird gets plastered by the car going 75mph....

Oh dear where do I start! There is so much floppy fabric in the front where it's ruched (sp?)... and because I obviously over ruched the front is TOO SHORT! (Like way too short...) The hips are pretty snug, like afraid to sit down snug and the back above the rump is very fabricy too...

Now I don't know what to do. To go back and un-ruch some of the side would mean A LOT of ripping out stitches and ripping out the zipper. And even if I did that I am not sure if that would afford me more room in the hips too...

Help someone who knows better than me!!

I went this weekend up to Fort Worth to check out an indie craft fair I found out about through etsy.

It was pretty good. It was super small compared to what I was used to going to back in the day when my mom did bazaars at the Camplex. I wanted to check it out because I am thinking about entering a booth next year. That would be totally exciting and I would have to get a lot of products made!
I met up with my grandma and we perused the 2 aisles. There was a lot of super cute stuff! (Also a lot of things that would not interest me :) ) I could have bought a lot, but since handmade is always a little more costly than retail (unfortunately) I only bought one of the many things I was eying. Behold my new hat!!

Back in July when I was visiting Wyoming for a month, Kristen and I did a whole lot of garage sale shopping! There was one particular house that was a huge score and I got a pair of shoes for $1 and tons of clothes for Aaran. I wasn't in love with the shoes, but they were a $1 and they fit.

So fast forward to Saturday afternoon and a bottle of this;

So here's the quick and dirty picture version!!!

And I love them! I am going to wear them to church, along with another handmade crafted item from Saturday. But I am going to make you wait in suspense and I will post pics tomorrow!! :D

Saturday Clean-up

So today I decided to take a little break from the dress sewing and try to clean up the sewing room and improve it's look a tad bit. I filed away all the scattered patterns everywhere and then decided to take care of the dilapidated ironing board.

See the yucky stain, ugly denim color and rotary cut right down the middle? (I had a mental brain lapse many months ago and cut something on the ironing board with my rotary cutter... I know, I know!)

The fabric I had that I wanted to use was wider than it was long, so I took the liberty of sewing it together length wise. I figured it was just an ironing board, no one is going to care if there is a seam down the center :)

Then I took the string out from the old cover and saved it to use later :) Next I traced out the old cover onto the new fabric.

I pressed an approximately 1/2" seam all the way around and then I sewed the string casing. (I was lazy since the underside is never seen I didn't finish the fabric edge.)

Then tied the string off onto a safety pin and feed it through.

Then put the finished product onto the board frame. Easy as that!! And I must say it looks a whole lot better too! :)

First day of sewing - Butterick 5383

Ok so I gathered my courage and put my (skinny size 60) needle to fabric.

I started with the darts; back and front.

Then I sewed the 2 back panels together

Not too bad so far. The only "snag" I have run into thus far is what ever material this is, the edges are fraying pretty bad and at one point while sewing the back panels together, the fuzzies got caught up with the thread in the needle and the top thread broke. So I remedied the jam, re-threaded and continued.

Next I put 2 gather stitches on each side of the front panel and also stay stitched the bottom of the V neck area. (Sorry no pictures of that... kinda routine/boring/normal. But how about a scanned pic :) )

And lastly I pulled the right front side gather stitch and then stitched it to the right back side.

And that is what I have done so far. The only thing I am not too trilled with is the gather. Mine is not as rouchy (sp?) as I could like it to be, nor as what the photo and direction pictures look like... but other than that still trucking along.

Although I have glanced ahead on the directions and I am not really sure what the next step (step 6) means. (It says; "to stay left side opening edge, cut seam binding using back Patter Tissue [2] as guide. Cut seam binding the length of seamline between small circles, plus 1/2".)

Anyone have any clues?

Ok, so I have decided to blog through my first clothes sewing adventure. I hope I have not gone in over my head with this first one. We will all find out!!

So here is the dress I am making... Butterick 5383

This is the fabric I chose, and I hope it works because it was not one of the fabrics recommended on the pattern. Butterick recommended Stretch Wovens, Ponte Knits and Jersey. All of which I have no idea what they are! (I suppose I better learn these things if I am going to start sewing my own clothes!!) (Side note, I have been reading Dawn for many weeks now and hope to make beautiful clothes like hers one day!!)

So I have done a tissue fitting just like Gertie has instructed me to!

(And P.S. I can only hope that someone who knows how to sew is reading this because then they can stop me at every point and say "WAIT!! You are making a huge mistake doing A... It is supposed to be done in manner B." So if you are out there and reading please speak up and offer all sorts of advice and knowledge!)

Here is what I found out during my tissue fitting. I definitely need to move into the real world and just buy the pattern based on what the measurements say on the flap!! I am a buying clothes size 12, but definitely not a size 12 is sewing measurements! So here is what I changed;

1. I added 2 inches to the shoulder length because the arm opening was squeezing the life out of my armpit.

2. I added 2 inches to the front and back because I should have bought a larger pattern size!! Which automatically added 1.5 inches to the neck line. (I don't know how I would have been able to prevent this.....)

3. Since I lengthened the shoulder strap on the dress by 2 inches I also added 2 inches in the neck binding. And I also added 1.5 inches because I lengthened the neck when I widened the dress. (This part threw me for a loop for a long while and I starred at this pattern piece for a long time before I cut and decided what to do with it!!)

4. Finally I added the adjustments to the inside lining pieces as well.

So after all this I measured many many times and then cut the fabric... I was a little nervous I must admit! (I know the bottom hem is not straight, but I actually didn't cut it, I left it from the original fabric in case I need more hem. I am going with the longer B version of the dress because I am so tall, it actually hits me at the knee. So I left the crocked bottom just in case :) )

So I think that's all so far! I am going to go into my sewing room and stare at my cut outs and try to get the courage up for putting a needle in them!! (Reminder to self..... change the huge needle in your machine from 90 to 60...)

3 Column Confusion.... Help!

Ok well I have figured out the 3 column thing! But now it won't let me use the banner I made in the header. I have it uploaded in the layout widget and it loads on the widget page, but it doesn't show up on my blog page.... any suggestions? I have never had this problem before....

What I did today...

So it's the day after the birthday soiree and I have many much moosen things to do! Yesterday was just and average day, but it was still wonderful none the less. I did regular morning things and then went to work in the afternoon, but it was the hanging out with the people I love in the evening that made it joyous. I ate cake (it was yum!) and we sang worship and there was craft gifts involved :) But today my list is long a drawn out.
Here is what I had to do this morning....

Phew! I am so glad that is out of the way! It was the most important item on today's list. I suppose now I can go relax with peace of mind until lunch and then it's off to work!

Decoupage Out of Control!!!

I love making boring everyday things, unboring and un-everyday :) I am slowly transforming the things in my house to reflect that :) Here is my latest decoupage project;

I think I probably have Kristen to thank because she was the one who first introduced me to the wonderful bliss of Mod Podge in college! Then I found this site and the creative projects just took off!

I started by cleaning the whole cabinet and taking out the drawers. I also took off the handles, but unfortunately no amount of unscrewing and hand tools could get the lock out, so I just left it on :( The I measured and cut my fabric. After that easy breezy, paint down your decoupage and then lay your fabric over it. I also coated the outside with another layer of Mod Podge.

While I was at it I figured I would make a matching light switch cover too! :)

I Feel Swindled...

So a couple of months ago our printer ran out of Black and Magenta ink right in the middle of a very important print session! So I bit the big one and went to trusty Wal-mart and bought the 2 cartridges, totaling around $40 :(

Here is where I should have learned 2 lessons, but more on that later.

So I went home installed the fresh ink and began to print away again. Half way through the third page, the images are looking very pink and not in a good way... All the pages are finished and then my printer tells me that the Cyan cartridge is now empty! Arg! (So first lesson, check ALL of the cartridge levels BEFORE you go to the store.) So I give up and ask a friend if I can come print out the last page on her computer.

So fast forward many months to now. Because we are poor I haven't bought any more cartridges since and have gone without being able to print things. (This has caused a mass pile-up of sticky notes around the desk area....) Well just because I was on Amazon the other day I decided to search printer cartridges. I was shocked! And I felt swindled and had a smoldering dislike for Wal-mart. I found 6 color cartridges (2 of each color) for $14.00! It cost me more than that for 1 color cartridge at Wal-mart.... So I guess that is lesson number 2, shop around. And I definitely won't be going back to Wal-mart for cartridges.... ever.

I love to read! My 3 favorite books are Les Miserables, The Count of Monte Cristo and Pride & Prejudice. But recently I have been getting e-mails from McCalls with giant craft books and these have really piqued my interest! I am too poor to buy them so I look them up on Amazon and gaze lovingly and then I look for them at the town library :) Most of them aren't there, but I have found some others that are fun. So I am eating a plate of biscuits and honey for breakfast and Eva is staring intently at them. I tell her "no, lay down", so she does. A few mins later I pick up the plate to continue eating and she turns her head away and is trying with all her might not to stare at me, but is sort of looking at me out of the side of her eyes... like "I'm not looking at the biscuits that I am not supposed to be looking at.... is she looking at me?" It was really funny! Silly puppy!

So I went to Good Will the other day and I bought 5 boxes for $6.00 and I made a little project out of them. So far I have finished 3 boxes. I really like them. I used some of the point I bought in 8oz. jars from home depot (to figure out wall colors) and some paper that I bought a long time ago from Hobby Lobby and a little mod podge. "24 million Texans can't be wrong" Really? I think to myself as I drive by that billboard for the 40 hundredth time on my way home from work. It's a billboard advertising Lone Star Beer and I disagree, I think 24 million Texans can be wrong. It baffles me sometimes when I remember how much alcoholic drinking goes on in the world.

But as I am driving by it, the slogan got me thinking about several current affairs and shifts in our nation's thinking. People are wanting laws passed to legalize same sex marriage and to keep abortions legal and to use embryonic stem cells and many other things that our tolerant way of thinking leads us these days. If we can just get enough people to say it's right then it's right. If the law says we can do it then I am justified in taking those actions.

How many people do we need to agree with something to make it right?

And as I am driving God says to me "Lindsey, no matter how many come against me and my ways I am still truth". God stands alone above any man and whether the stances we take for things are with Him or opposite of Him, He will always be right. The whole world can stand up for a woman's right to choose, but if God says it is wrong, then that will never change.

This cute little face is unclean!! Nemo has tapeworms!! Ewwww

It started because he jumped up on my lap and I shooshed him down with my hands. Well one hand grazed his butt and low and behold there was a little grain of rice white thing on my finger. I ran to the sink ewwwing the whole way, disposed of the wormie and washed my hands. I checked his butt and there was nothing else there. Then I bleached my hands!!! The internet says he has tapeworms... ugh. I have a feeling this is going to be a fighting/cleaning battle. Cleanse the cat and everything he has ever sat on!

I have the most wonderful husband.

Let me explain...

On Wednesday nights in Flipside we are going through the book of Genesis. We have been discussing Joseph and how God wanted to use him. God even showed Joseph in dreams that he was going to use them. Well we all know that Joseph got a little over confident and his brothers got a little jealous, so they sold Joseph into slavery and he ended up in Egypt. So fast forward to the part with Joseph and Potiphar's wife. She wants Joseph, he is a Hebrew trying to be in God's will and a servant to his master Potiphar. So Aaran is trying to explain to the kids about taking what God has for you versus taking what you want for yourself. So Aaran goes around the circle with a deck of cards and tells them all to take a card; any card they want. Then he goes around again and gives them each a card. So all this to make a long story short, the card you take is what you want for your life and the card given is what God wants for your life. So Joseph is trying to take what God is giving and he is fleeing from what he might want for himself. Well this is all good for the kids and they get it, but God is not through, He has a really sweet message for me. When we took the cards I got the King of diamonds and not really knowing why we were taking cards I am thinking, "wow this is a good card. Hahaha I love it!". So I am in good shape right. Well while Aaran is passing out cards he is looking at them and giving each card to each person. He comes to me and chuckles and hands me the Queen of Hearts. So of course I was all like "awwww", but then I started thinking, this card represents what God has for me, this card is what God gave me, a good and perfect gift. That card is my husband, Aaran. That good and perfect gift from God is him to me. I am so blessed by Aaran and I am not thankful enough for the wonderful man that God has given me. It's so easy to look at all the things that bug me about him and overlook all the MANY wonderful qualities he has, qualities that God knew my husband was going to need. Qualities of patience, humor, kindness, patience, tenderness, caring, patience, compassion, love for the Lord, a desire to do God's will and patience.

Thank you Lord for giving me the Queen of Hearts, because you knew better than anything I could take for my life that he was what I needed.

I quite possibly might switch over to blogger to continue my blogging fun, but I am sad at the loss of how many years I already have on my bravejournal blog. Oh the decisions I have to make in life!
